Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic and surgical procedure that allows our veterinarians to examine your pet’s internal organs using a flexible tube with a camera. Endoscopy can be used to visualize, biopsy, or even retrieve foreign objects from the gastrointestinal tract without the need for traditional open surgery.

Overview

Endoscopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic and surgical procedure that allows our veterinary team to evaluate internal organs and structures using a flexible tube equipped with a camera and light (an endoscope). This technique enables us to visualize areas such as the esophagus, stomach, intestines, nasal passages, and airways without the need for large incisions.

In many cases, it also allows us to perform biopsies or remove foreign objects safely and efficiently. When endoscopy is used, pets benefit from faster recovery times, less pain, and reduced risk of infection compared to traditional exploratory surgery.

Why would my pet need an endoscopy?

Veterinary endoscopy may be recommended for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.

Common uses include:

  • Investigating chronic vomiting, diarrhea, or weight loss

  • Diagnosing inflammatory bowel disease or gastrointestinal cancer

  • Retrieving ingested foreign objects

  • Evaluating nasal discharge or respiratory conditions

  • Collecting biopsies for internal disease evaluation

  • Examining abnormalities noted on imaging (X-rays or ultrasound)

Endoscopy allows for real-time internal visualization and sampling while minimizing discomfort for your pet.

When would endoscopy be needed?

Endoscopy is typically performed when internal conditions are suspected that cannot be diagnosed through physical exams or imaging alone. It is often used as an intermediate step between initial diagnostics and more invasive surgery.

It’s especially beneficial when:

  • Your pet has persistent or unexplained GI symptoms

  • A swallowed object needs to be removed without surgical intervention

  • A minimally invasive option is preferred for diagnosis or treatment

  • A safe and less painful method of biopsy is required

How do we care for your pet during an endoscopy?

At Animal Medical Center of Plainfield, we provide the same level of surgical care during endoscopic procedures as we do for more invasive surgeries. Your pet will be placed under anesthesia and carefully monitored by our experienced veterinary team throughout the procedure.

We use advanced anesthesia protocols and continuous monitoring to ensure your pet’s safety and comfort. Pain management, warming systems, and post-procedure support are all tailored to your pet’s needs. Our goal is always to keep your pet safe, comfortable, and stress-free as much as possible.
